USA men win second-straight over Argentina

July 24, 2005, Formosa, Argentina - Pieter Olree scored a match-high 20 points to pace a balanced attack as the USA mens national Volleyball team earned a 3-1 win over Argentina on Sunday night.

Olree had 15 kills, three blocks and two service aces in the 25-22, 27-29, 25-20, 25-22 victory for the Americans, who won their second-straight match of the five-match series in Argentina despite still being shorthanded.

Team USA, which overcame an 8-3 deficit in the fourth set, was competing with just seven players for the second-straight match due to a visa issuance problem.

Curt Toppel scored 19 points on 18 kills and one block, while 2004 Olympian Riley Salmon added 18 points on 16 kills and two blocks for the United States.

Phil Eatherton chipped in with nine points, David Lee posted eight points and setter Chris Tamas added three points to cap the scoring for Team USA, which improved to 7-3 overall this season.

Lucas Chavez scored 15 points while Gaston Giani, Gustavo Porporato and Maximo Torcello each added 11 points to lead Argentina.

The third match of the tour is scheduled for Wednesday, July 27 in Cordoba City. The teams will also play in the cities of San Francisco (July 28) and Gualeguaychu (July 30).

Argentina, ranked No. 7 in the world, and the United States (No. 5) met twice last season during the USA Global Challenge in Austin, Texas, with the Americans winning both times (3-2 and 3-0). Both teams also participated at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Team USA finished fourth overall, while the Argentineans finished tied for fifth.

Following the Argentina tour, Team USA will travel to Porto Alegre, Brazil , to compete in the Americas Cup along with Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Cuba and Venezuela from Aug. 2-7.
