USA men defeat Argentina to begin five-match tour

July 23, 2005, Resistencia, Argentina - Riley Salmon scored a match-high 20 points to lead four players in double-figures as the USA Mens National Volleyball team posted a 3-1 win over Argentina Friday night.

Salmon had 18 kills and two service aces in the 18-25, 25-23, 25-19, 27-25 victory for the Americans, who won the opener of a five-match series in Argentina despite being shorthanded.

Team USA was competing with just seven players due to a visa issuance problem. Despite the absence of a bench, the United States rebounded from a first-set loss to earn the win.

Pieter Olree scored 17 points, David Lee posted 16 points, Curt Toppel added 10 points and Phil Eatherton chipped in with nine points for the United States.

Olree had 15 kills and one ace, while Lee registered eight kills, a match-high seven blocks and one ace. Toppel blasted nine kills with one block and Eatherton had seven kills and two blocks for Team USA , who improved to 6-3 overall this season.

Lucas Chavez scored 15 points and Gaston Giani added 14 points to lead Argentina .

The second match of the tour is scheduled for Sunday, July 24 in the city of Formosa . The teams will also play in the cities of Cordoba City (July 27), San Francisco (July 28) and Gualeguaychu (July 30).

Argentina, ranked No. 7 in the world, and the United States (No. 5) met twice last season during the USA Global Challenge in Austin, Texas, with the Americans winning both times (3-2 and 3-0). Both teams also participated at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Team USA finished fourth overall, while the Argentineans finished tied for fifth.

Following the Argentina tour, Team USA will travel to Porto Alegre, Brazil to compete in the Americas Cup along with Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Cuba and Venezuela from Aug. 2-7.
