FIVB $15 Million World League - Greece well positioned for Finals

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 22 - In a match that had all the elements of one of their own classic dramas, Greece rose to glory on Sunday night to knock out the Czech Republic in a tiebreaker thriller to virtually secure their place among the elite eight national teams who will contest the final of the $15 million World League in Spain next month. Greek coach Stelianos Prosalikas was understandably delighted after their 3-2 win saying "After our seventh place in the World Championships and our successful European Championships qualification in spring this year, this qualification among the best eight teams of World League is another big success of Greek volleyball." Pool D, which started one week ahead of the other pools finished their Intercontinental Round this week and Czech Republic as World League debutants sealed their own finals spot with their eighth successive victory on Saturday. Sunday's win by Greece in Ostrava moved them into second place on the Pool D table with 19 points, one more than France, who split their final away matches with Japan to finish third. Greece could join the Czech Republic, World League finals hosts Spain and Pool A winners Russia in the finals lineup depending on Poland's results against Russia next weekend. Russia was defeated for the first time on Saturday by Poland. Meanwhile Pool B Brazil split its matches with Italy in Brasilia this weekend and both have 18 points with one week left to play. Italy is a shade ahead on set ratio and Germany and Portugal bring up the rear. In Pool C Bulgaria scored two wins over Serbia and Montenegro in the Black Sea resort of Varna and now leads the table by one point, while Cuba and the Netherlands also split their matches.
