LAUSANNE, Switzerland, June 8, 2003 - Bulgaria and the Czech Republic are two of the big surprise leaders on top of their respective Pools following the completion of Week 4 of the $15million World League Intercontinental Rounds on Sunday.
Both teams completed clean sweeps over the weekend, Bulgaria over the Netherlands and the Czech Republic over Japan, to lead Pool C and Pool D respectively. An incredible scenario considering Bulgaria are making their first World League appearance in four years and the Czech Republic are World League debutants.
Following Sunday's results, which saw World League champions Russia defeat Spain 3-1 (26-24, 20-25, 25-21, 25-23), Serbia and Montenegro beat Cuba 3-2 (21-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-17, 15-11), Italy beat Germany 3-1 (25-18, 19-25, 25-22, 31-29), Brazil beat Portugal 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-15) and the Czech Republic beat Japan 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-18) for their second straight sets victory of the weekend, the Czech Republic, with five successive wins, are ahead of Greece on Set Ratio in Pool D with World Championship bronze medallists France in third spot with four victories.
Meanwhile, Bulgaria, with four wins, hold first place in Pool C on Set Ratio over Serbia and Montenegro while the Netherlands sit one point further back. Of the other two Pools, Russia are undefeated with six wins in Pool A while Brazil leads Italy in Pool B on Set Ratio as both sides have only lost one of their six games.
Week 5 of 7 starts next Friday as all four groups start to calculate their run in to the World League Final Round, which will be held in Spain in July. However, all eyes will be on Pool D where France are placed third with only two rounds remaining after their Pool started a week earlier than the three other groups.
