Twenty-three-year-old Joao Malveiro is one of 12 Portuguese players elected to take part in the 2003 World League representing the national team, his fourth international competition.
The young player from Coimbra Academic Association analyzes the games disputed in Italy and the next encounters of the Portuguese Selection in the 14th edition of the World League.
"Against Italy, what happened was that we could not show our potential. We looked restricted in play, committed a lot of mistakes and the result was a reflection of what happened. We are conscious that we can play much better, but to achieve that we must have better concentration and more willingness to play," he recognized.
In the second set of the second match against the Italians, Portugal improved and almost triumphed (25-27).
"I don't know for sure what happened. In that moment the team felt that we had to play after the way we lost in the first set. The players felt they had to show something. Unfortunately, that didn't last long. In the third set we took a step back and couldn't find the way we know how to play."
Regarding Germany, Malveiro set his objective:
"Despite that, we consider Germany to be not an easy team to beat, those are games that we have an obligation to win. When we went to Italy we were conscious of the difficulties, but we had one idea: if we win the first set, we are going to play to win the second, and after that we can play to win the match."
"Against Germany we cannot think the same way. We have to win, we can not have a different hypothesis. We know that we can be triumphant in the two matches but we have to show the desire to beat our rivals."
In Brazil, the German national team suffered two losses (0-3, 1-3), but managed to win a set (25-23) against the World Champions.
"The only set with a competitive result was the one the Germans took; the others were pretty one-sided (25-16, 25-13 and 25-14). We also played a tight set against Italy, who is one of the Volleyball super powers. I didn't see the matches but it is probable that Brazil played too relaxed and the Germans took advantage of the chance."
"If we have a good preparation on this week and we played with focus, I think that we have all the chances of defeating the Germans."
