May 21, 2003 - The North, Central American and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA), took an important step last weekend becoming the first of FIVB's five Confederations to adopt the International Volleyball Federation's (FIVB) Code of Conduct as part of its governing regulations.
The Executive Committee and Board of Administration of NORCECA met from May 16-18 in Santo Domingo and unanimously approved the proposal of President Mr. Cristóbal Marte Hoffiz to adopt the Code of Conduct. Delegates from 12 countries in the region attended the meeting.
The FIVB Code of Conduct was approved and adopted at the FIVB World Congress held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, September 2002 with immediate implementation into each of the 217 National Federations affiliated to the FIVB, as well as into each of FIVB's five Continental Confederations.
"The FIVB Code of Conduct is without a doubt the very heart of our organization," said FIVB President Dr. Rubén Acosta. "It is a vital part of our solidarity and discipline as an international organization and signals to the world that we are a united body."
President Acosta has underlined that the FIVB Code of conduct must be adopted by the 217 National Federations and the five Continental Confederations of the sport's governing body.
In other news from NORCECA's meeting, the members of the Executive Committee and Board of Administration supported the presidential proposal that NORCECA adopts the entire FIVB Constitution and General Regulations.
"Our Confederation is a branch of the FIVB in this continent," President Marte Hoffiz said. "We totally depend on our mother organization, we are its representatives and we owe it loyalty. For that reason we have taken this decision," the NORCECA president underlined.
The opening ceremony of the meeting in the Barcelo Gran Hotel Lina, was conducted in the presence of the Minister of Sports of the Dominican Republic Mr. Cesar Cedeño while Dr. Jose Joaquin Puello, the President of the Organizing Committee of the XIV Pan-American Sport Games, Santo Domingo 2003, saluted the delegates during a visit.
The meeting closed with the decision to elaborate a public document, in which NORCECA expressed its absolute and personal endorsement to its leader, Dr Rubén Acosta, who has elevated FIVB into the largest International Sport Federation of the world.
The next NORCECA Congress will be held in Atlanta City on October 25-26.
