SANTO DOMINGO. May 15, 2003 - The Dominican Republic women's national team has started a three-week tour of Europe in preparation for the Pan American Games to be held in Santo Domingo in August.
Currently in Spain playing friendly matches, the Dominicans then will go to Portugal for a series of games before taking part in the Montreaux Volley Masters Tournament in Switzerland in June, which will also include NORCECA members the United States and Cuba.
Following the Swiss event, the Dominicans, who were runner-up in the Mexicali Centenarian Cup behind Cuba in April, will return to Santo Domingo for more training before one last warm-up game at the Pan American Cup in Mexico in July.
The squad now has all its players back with Nurys Arias, Cosiris Rodriguez and Milagros Cabral returning from the Spaniard League. Veteran setter Francia Jackson, the captain of the team, said she was happy with how team has grouped together and are prepared to put in the hard work.
"We have not stopped training since the beginning of the year," she said. "In Mexicali we were without some of big players but now we are in top gear and hope to be among the medallists in front of our people during the Pan Am Games."
