Quarterfinals completed

Riga/Tallinn, March 31, 2005 - In the Boys' and Girls' Youth European Championships 2005 each team has played their two preliminary group rounds so that the final eight teams for the knock out quarterfinal matches have been decided.

Poland, Russia, Italy, Bulgaria, France, Slovakia, Serbia & Montenegro and Slovenia are the eight final teams to compete in the Boys' under-19 quarterfinals in Riga (LAT) whereas the under-18 Girls? national teams from Italy, Russia, Croatia, Belarus, Ukraine, Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic will remain in the Audentes sports hall of Tallinn (EST) in order to fight for the promising youth champion title.

Poland surprised Russia in the opening match of the day in Riga, where during the entire day more than 2'000 spectators passed the entry gates. Although both teams were already qualified for the quarterfinal stage, they were both equally keen to win. When Russia won the first set, the scene changed completely. Poland started to play better, grabbing the final 3:1 victory.

Italy became the winner of Pool B after winning 3:1 against Bulgaria. The Bulgarian team won the first set and was leading by many points in the second. However, at the end of the second set Italy improved their play. With the victory over Bulgaria Italy will meet Russia in Friday's quarterfinal, whilst Bulgaria will play against Poland.

Host Latvia had to win against France to reach the next round. This was however an impossible task as the French team was simply too strong for the home formation. Even though Latvia fought hard, they lost the match 3:1. Serbia & Montenegro won their second match by nailing Spain in three straight sets.

In the Girls' competition Germany won the final clash of the pool matches, beating the Czech Republic in straight sets. Now the Germans, who finished on fifth position in the Youth European Championships 2003, will face Russia in the quarterfinal, whilst the Italians will be challenged by the Czech formation. "We wanted to beat the Czech Republic in order to come against the Russians in the quarterfinal round", explained Germany's head coach Dirk Gross, "we think that we stand better chances against the Russians than against the Italians."

Together with the Italians and the Girls from the Ukraine the defending champion Croatia belongs to the most outstanding teams of the competition with all three teams having won their pool matches in straight sets. Croatia will now meet the Austrian formation who managed to qualify after their victory over Hungary in the first match of the day, whereas the Ukraine will face Belarus.

One of the most interesting matches of the Boys' quarterfinals on Friday will be the clash between Italy and Russia. Furthermore, the teams ranked third in their preliminary group will play for the ninth till 12th position. The semifinal matches will take place on Saturday, whilst the events in Riga and Tallinn will come to a conclusion on Sunday. Besides fighting for the European title, the best six teams will qualify for the World Championship.
