Tours stronger than host team

Thessaloniki, Greece, March 27, 2005 - In the final of the Indesit European Champions' League 2004/05 Iraklis Thessaloniki didn't manage to take the home victory, having to surrender to the guests from France, Tours Vb 1:3.

Even though Iraklis Thessaloniki received faithful support from the over 8'000 spectators, they had to finally surrender to Tours Vb in a very tight four-set match, where each set could have gone either way. Winning the first set 25-21 Iraklis had set points in the second set, however, Tours showed the stronger nerves (29-31). Performing stronger and more consistently during the third set the French team advanced with a maximum of seven points before seizing the 2:1 set lead (17-25). In a very tight fourth set Iraklis didn't manage to take advantage of a small lead, so that Tours became the new champion!

In the earlier match Russian Lokomotiv Belgorod claimed the bronze medal after defeating German Vfb Friedrichshafen in the match for third position. The team coached by Gennady Shipulin won the two previous editions of the Indesit European Champions' League but were eliminated by host Iraklis Thessaloniki in this year's semifinal round. Lokomotiv Belgorod won the bronze medal match 3:0 with Sergey Baranov scoring ten points for his team. On the other side national team player Jochen Schoeps also booked ten points for Vfb Friedrichshafen.
