INDESIT EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2004/05

Luxembourg, October 26, 2004 - All eyes will be set on the best European club volleyball teams from Wednesday, 3 November 2004 onwards, the day that marks the start of the League Round of the Men's Indesit European Champions' League 2004/05, while Europe's best women's teams start their play the following week on Wednesday, 10 November 2004.

From November 2004 until March 2005 the fifth edition of the Indesit European Champions' League with a total of 172 matches will be taking place in Europe. A new feature will include the LIVE postage of match results on the CEV webpage (www.cev.lu) which will be available as of Wednesday, 3 November 2004 from the start of the first official match onwards. By clicking 'highlights' on the CEV homepage the user will automatically be transferred to a webpage transmitting the live scores of all presently running matches.

With 20 participating teams in the main draw of the men's Indesit European Champions' League the league round is composed of four groups of five teams each. Following a total ten rounds of double round robin pool matches the best 12 teams proceed to the play-off round of which the Drawing of Lots will take place on Thursday, 20 January 2005 in Luxembourg. The best four teams finally play the Final Four scheduled for March 2005. Pool A of the men?s competition is the toughest group considering that four of the five teams reached the podium at least once in the previous years of the Indesit European Champions' League. "All five teams have the possibility to reach the next round", Noliko MAASEIK's manager René Corstjens stated. "Our spectators will already be able to enjoy four top matches at home during the league round event." One of the interesting pool C clashes will be the encounter between Sisley TREVISO from Italy and Austrian Hypo Tirol INNSBRUCK. "We have great contacts with the Austrian team", Sisley TREVISO's manager Bruno Da Re stated. "They have three Italian players while their coach is also of Italian origin. We both hoped to play against each other and we are extremely happy that this will be the case."

The League Round of the women's Indesit European Champions' League will be played in two pools of six teams each. Only the best six teams will be qualified for the play-off round whose format will be decided at the Drawing of Lots on Wednesday, 26 January 2005 in Luxembourg. The Final Four of the women's competition is also scheduled for March 2005. The two pools of the women's Indesit European Champions' League are of equal standard. Defending champion TENERIFE Marchal (ESP) will try to reach the next round from Pool B in which Italian Sant'Orsola Asystel NOVARA, coached by the well-known Angiolino Frigoni, should be the most difficult to beat. "We are happy to be in this group", Plamen Takev of TENERIFE Marichal said. "The pools are well balanced but nevertheless we have a good chance of making it to the next round." RC CANNES from France was the winner of the 2002-2003 Indesit European Champions' League. Being drawn into Pool A where Foppapedretti BERGAMO (ITA) and Uralochka EKATERINBURG (RUS) also stand as extremely strong teams, RC CANNES manager Pierre-Alain Vuolo declares: "It will be tough for us, but if you are playing in the Indesit European Champions' League no matches will be given to you."

Officially recognised as the CEV's strongest club competition since 1999 the Indesit European Champions' League enjoys increasing media and spectator attention with Indesit being the title sponsor for the fourth year running. In addition CEV's long-term partner Austrian Airlines, sponsor of the European Volleyball Confederation's Top Teams Cup and CEV Cups, as well as Champion have confirmed their ongoing interest.
