September 26, 2004 - For the first time in the history of the South American Men's Junior Championship the 10 national teams of the South American Confederation (CSV) will take part in the sub-continental competition, which starts on Monday in Santiago, Chile.
The XVII edition of this important event in the Gimnasio Polideportivo de Ņuņoa will see national teams from Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela split into two qualifying groups, to play for the title and for spots in the next World Junior Championship.
"There is no doubt that this unprecedented participation motivates us even more to organize a good tournament," said President of Chiles Volleyball Federation Ricardo Vorpahl. "This will be the first time that the 10 teams from the South American Confederation will meet in an event for juniors. We are fulfilled with pride and feel obliged to make a great effort."
"We hope to meet all the organizing expectations, as it will be a first class event, where we will see future adult sides from Brazil, Venezuela and Argentina who are, without doubt, world powers in this sport," added the President.
Regarding the characteristics of the site which will host the event and the Chilean side he added: "We have chosen for the tournament the best sites in the country for Volleyball, as the Gimnasio Polideportivo de Ņuņoas central court, which has been equipped with professional flooring, as per the World Championships and Olympic Games."
Unquestionably, the presence of the Brazilian national team will be one of the highlights of the Chilean tournament, specially when the green and yellow side comes from an impeccable preparation for the championship, in which they intend to repeat their title victory in Brazil two years ago
In the way of the side coached by Marcos Lerbach is the powerful Argentinean side and Venezuela, the runners-up in the previous championship two years ago.
