WINNIPEG, Canada.- August 9, 2004 - USA captured the gold medal in the NORCECA Womenís Junior Championship (Under 20 years-old) defeating the Dominican Republic in straight sets 25-23, 25-22, 25-16.
With Cuba out the USA was undoubtedly the team to beat in this gold metal final. However, the Dominican Republic proved that they were going to be a worthy opponent, not one the USA should take lightly.
Cynthia Barboza led USA with 11 points and Jordan Larson and Foluke Akinradewo added 10 and 9 respectively. Sidarka Nunez was the best Dominican with 14 and Dahiana Burgos had 9 points.
Cuba won the gold medal in the menís division (U-21) prevailing over USA in a battle of titans between these two big teams. The score was 25-19, 21-25, 25-22, 25-20.
Michael Sanchez was the best Cuban offensive weapon with 20 points joined by Osmany Juantorena with 14 and Pedro Ortiz with 9. Jacob Weins scored 19 for the Americans and Chase Budinger added 12.
Puerto Rico won both bronze medals defeating the representatives of Canada. The Women won 25-22, 25-23, 14-25, 25-20 and the Men triumphed 25-14, 22-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-10.
Sarai Alvarez and Yarimar Rosa had 19 and 15 points for Puerto Ricoís women and Sarah Pavan and Colette Meek totaled 25 and 10 respectively for Canada.
Ivan Perez led three Puerto Ricans in double figures with 17 points. Josue Nunez and Exequiel Cruz added 14 and 12. Canada also had three players in double digits with Louis-Pierre Mainiville with 15 and Douglas van Spronsen and Joel Schmuland with 14 and 13 points.
