WINNIPEG, Canada, August 8, 2004 - The Dominican Republic advanced to the gold medal match against USA in the Women’s Junior NORCECA Championship after a clear victory over Canada 25-20, 25-20, 25-12.
This victory automatically qualifies the Dominicans to next year's World Championship to be played in Turkey.
Sidarka Nuñez led the skilled Dominicans with 11 points while Dahiana Burgos and Ginette Selmo each added 10 points. Once again Sarah Pavan led the Canadians with 11 points.
USA, with a bench full of raw talent and confidence, defeated the talented Puerto Rico team in straight sets by score of 25-20, 25-15, 25-23.
Jordan Larson scored 14 points for USA and Foluke Akinradewo and Cynthia Barboza added 11 and 9 points respectively. Sarai Alvarez was the top scorer for Puerto Rico with 14 points.
In Men’s action, USA defeated Canada in three sets and now will meet Cuba for the gold medal. A Canada-USA match up is always an exciting and emotional game and these two teams did not disappoint. However, when the final whistle blew to end the match the USA had won 25-21, 25-17, 25-19.
Jacob Weins was the best attacker for the Americans with 14 points and Jacob Schkud and Chase Buninger each had 10 points. For Canada, Louis-Pierre Mainville and Douglas van Spronson each had 10 points.
In the other match of this gender, Ivan Perez scored 21 points as Puerto Rico defeated Mexico 25-21, 25-17, 32-30. The Puerto Ricans will meet Canada for the bronze medal.
