Winnipeg, MB - July 8 2004 - In front of a crowd of over 1000 at the University of Winnipeg's Duckworth Centre, the National Men's Volleyball Team struggled against a veteran Argentina Team losing in straight sets this evening. Scores were 21-25, 20-25 & 20-25 in favor of the 8th world ranked Argentina. Team Canada is currently ranked 10th in the world.
Rookie Dallas Soonias (Red Deer, AB) lead Team Canada with 13 points, while sophomore Fred Winters (North Vancouver, BC) added 9 points.
"Despite the score this was the first international match for half of our starters tonight and I was pleased with their efforts," stated Team Canada Head Coach Stelio DeRocco. "Argentina is a very good Team who served better and had better ball control tonight and that was the main difference for us. We had a young team play for us this evening and they showed us that the future of our Team is in very good hands. We have two more games left in this series and I am eager to see how the athletes respond."
Canada will take on Argentina in game two or the three game series this evening at 7:00pm, at the University of Winnipeg's Duckworth Centre. Tickets for the game are still available and can be purchased at the door.
