Winnipeg, Canada, 11 June 2004 - With five days left to go before they depart for their biggest tournament of the year, the National Womenís Volleyball Team is feeling ready to prove themselves against a very competitive line up at this years Pan American Cup. The third annual Pan American Cup will be taking place in Tijuana, Mexico June 18th-26th, and will act as a qualifier for the 2005 Womenís Grand Prix.
"This tournament is the biggest of the year for us, as half of the participating teams will have their Olympic Rosters present," stated Team Canada Head Coach Lorne Sawula. "USA, Cuba, Brazil and the Dominican Republic have all qualified for this summerís Olympic Games and will be extremely strong teams and great competition for us."
"It is a new cycle and we have a good group of players that are starting to have some quality international experiences under their belt. Our goal is to make the final four which would be outstanding giving the quality of teams at the event."
Representing Canada at the Pan American Cup will be:
Barb Bellini (White Rock, BC), Amy Tutt (West Vancouver, BC), Falin Schafer (Yellow Grass, SK), Emily Cordonier (Vancouver, BC), Tammy Mahon (Holland, MB), Melissa Raymond (Sherbrooke, PQ), Stephanie Wheler (Saskatoon, SK), Cheryl Stinson (Ottawa, ON), Lies Verhoeff (Calgary, AB), Anne-Marie Lemieux (Sherbrooke, PQ), Gina Schmidt (Beaverlodge, AB), Annie Levesque (Amqui, PQ).
The top three teams from the 2004 Pan American Cup will qualify for the 2005 Grand Prix. Participating teams include USA (2), Brazil (3), Cuba (6), Argentina (13), Dominican Republic (14), Puerto Rico (17), Costa Rica (30), Mexico (35), and Canada (21).
