May 03, 2004 - The Cuban women's national Volleyball team will participate in more than 40 international matches before the Olympic Games in order to be in "perfect shape" for the tournament, according to the team's Technical Director, Eugenio George.
When asked about the Cuban team's medal hopes at the 2004 Games, Eugenio George stated it would be necessary to take into account the results and performances from the forthcoming friendly matches in order to judge Cuba's chances in Athens.
Along with playing in an official tournament in China in May, Cuba will also be in action in Switzerland and at the Pan American Cup in Baja California, both in June. The women's team will then compete at the World Grand Prix, from July 7 to August 1st. "After finishing the Grand Prix we will not travel back to Cuba as that will be just 13 days before we begin in Athens," said George.
The Cuban National Team is formed by Nancy Carrillo, Zoila Barros, Rosir Calderon, Dulce Maria Tellez, Rachel Perez (14 years-old and 1.91 metres), Yusleini Herrera, Marta Sanchez, Yumilka Ruiz, Yaima Ortiz, Maivelis Martinez, Kenia Carcases, Anniara Munoz, Liana Mesa, Dami Ramirez and Yanelis Santos.
