Colorado Springs, Colorado, April 30, 2004 - Five of the six USA women's national team veterans who have been playing professionally overseas since November resume their national team duties on Monday, May 3 to begin preparations for the 2004 summer season, which culminates with Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, in August.
Heather Bown, Nancy Metcalf, Danielle Scott, Stacy Sykora and Logan Tom have all been playing in Italy since Team USA qualified for Athens by finishing third at the World Cup in Japan on Nov. 15.
Keba Phipps, who has been playing professionally in Brazil, played in her final match with her club on April 28 and will resume training with Team USA on May 10.
The women, who are currently ranked No. 2 in the world, have a full summer of competition before the Games begin on August 14.
Following a week-long training session in Athens from May 30-June 6, Team USA will compete at the Volley Masters in Montreux, Switzerland, from June 8-13 and the Pan American Cup in Tijuana, Mexico, from June 18-26.
The team will then take part in the World Grand Prix preliminary rounds in Asia from July 7-24. The top five teams, plus Italy, will then play in the World Grand Prix final round from July 27-August 1.
Should Team USA reach the Grand Prix final round, they will remain in Europe to train prior to arriving in Athens for the Olympic Games.
Two players were released from the national team program when the team returned from Russia earlier this week: middle blockers Jennifer Joines and Tracy Stalls. Joines has been with the team since January of this year. Stalls has been training with the team since January 2003.
