Songkla, Thailand, April 15, 2004 - Indonesia's Agus Salim and Koko Prasetyo Darkuncoro took sweet revenge over China B's Xu Qiang and Xu Linyin to win the men's title in the Samila Asian Beach Volleyball Tour in Songkhla on Friday.
Salim and Darkuncoro, who lost to Qiang and Linyin in the final of last week's Loma Asian Tour Beach Volleyball Invitation in Phatthalung, made amends with a 23-21 19-21 15-4 victory in front of a passionate local crowd.
Although the lead changed regularly it was Salim who assured the first set for the Indonesians with a convincing smash. China also trailed Indonesia from the start of the second set but they finally put their noses in front at 10-9 but at 17-19 down they had to rally strongly again to take the set and level the match. However it wasn't long before Indonesia wrapped up the third and final set to claim the honours.
"We lost to them last week and we learned from that," 30-year-old Salim said. "We watch the way they defend, the way they block and thank God that we won.
"The sand here also helped. It's soft and at the same time it's hard to jump. When Qiang couldn't jump high, his height did not pose a problem for us at all. That's why we were able to counter attack."
In the third place playoff New Zealand's Kirk Pitman and Jason Lochhead beat Thailand's Thiti Thanapongsathon and Borworn Yungthin 21-17 22-20.
In an all Chinese final in the women's event, Chen and Zhengqing overpowered last week's champions Hong Lina and Yan Ni 21-18 21-16 while defending champions Kamolthip Kulna and Jarunee Sannok beat Indonesia's Ni Putu Timmy Yudhani Rahayu and Siti Nurjanah 21-17 16-21 15-5 in the third place playoff.
