Peru given grand presidential welcome

March 11, 2003 - The national women's team of Peru and President of the Peruvian Volleyball Federation César Vértiz Mezzano was hosted by the Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo earlier this month following their brave efforts to qualify for the Athens Olympic Games at the South American Continental Olympic Qualifying tournament in January.

Despite an initial five-set defeat to Venezuela, the courageous Peruvian side recorded a dramatic four-set victory over Argentina, their first win over their neighbours since 1995, before missing out on a qualifying spot after losing to the Dominican Republic - special invitees from Norceca - in the final match of the tournament.

The tournament signaled an end to the marvelous career of veteran Natalia Málaga, a world and Olympic medalist from Seoul 1988, after 25 years in the sport. She continues to work for Peruvian Volleyball as a coach.
