MEXICALI, Baja California.- The Dominican Republic produced the biggest upset of the Women Centennial of Mexicali Cup blanking USA 3-0 and advancing to the gold medal match against Cuba.
Winless in their first three outings, the Dominicans overwhelmed the unbeaten Americans in the last two sets (25-15, 25-12) after a well battled opening (29-27).
The USA defence was regularly penetrated by power-hitters Sofia Mercedes and Milagros Lourdes, while setter Francia Jackson displayed a bright game and libero Evelyn Carrera repeatedly saved many balls.
The Dominicans had lost to USA 2-3 a day earlier in a long contest with the final set ending 15-17. The Americans finished 3-0 in the regular series with all their victories coming from behind and in five sets.
