MEXICALI, Baja California.- A powerful spike from Mígdalel Ruiz Juárez in the fourth set gave México a 3-1 victory over Dominican Republic and a tie with Cuba for second place in the standings of the Women Mexicali Centenal Cup.
The emotional set and match ended 29-27 in front of thousands of cheering local fans in the State Auditorium of Mexicali.
"The game was under a lot of pressure and the important thing was to put the ball in play," said a joyous Ruis after the game. "I was not in a position to hit it hard enough but decided to take the risk." Mexico won the first two sets 28-26 and 25-18 with the Dominicans, who blanked in their first matched against Cuba, taking the third 17-25.
Once again, Bibi Candelas, Claudia Rodriguez and Yendy Cortinas carried most of the offensive and defensive weight for the Mexican team.
Play continues in the tournament.
