MEXICALI, Mexico.- Cuba beat Dominican Republic 3-0 in the opening match of the Women's Mexicali Centennial Cup with Nancy Carrillo and Yanelis Santos leading a powerful Cuban powerful offensive, ably backed by Yumilca Ruiz and Sonia Barros to clean up 25-20, 25-15 and 27-25.
In the nightcap, USA came from behind and edged Mexico 3-2 erasing a 0-2 deficit. The third set, a marathon 31-29, proved to be pivotal for the Americans victory with a lengthy final score at 18-25, 24-26, 31-29, 25-17 and 15-13.
The matches were played in the brand new State Auditorium with NORCECO President Mr. Cristobal Marte Hoffiz in attendance, together with Mr. Jaime Diaz, Mayor of Mexicali, and Mr. Alejandro Salinas de la Garza, President of the Mexican Volleyball Federation.
Dominican Republic now meets Mexico and Cuba faces USA. The top two teams in the round-robin advance to the championship game. The third and fourth place squads will play for the bronze medal.
