Conde and Baracetti claim Argentine title

Favourites Mariano Baracetti and Martin Conde delivered for their home fans by claiming the Argentina Beach Volleyball Satellite Event in Mar del Plata, the opening tournament of the 2004 season, with a stunning straight sets 21-17, 21-19 win over the brothers from Switzerland Paul and Martin Laciga on Sunday.

The three day $15,000 tournament was played in superb conditions in front of generous crowds and it was fitting that the local fans were rewarded when the 2001 world champions lifted the title after 44 minutes of stunning Beach Volleyball action in the final.

Both teams gave their all before the home crowd eventually tipped the balance the way of Baracetti and Conde.

"I believe that the public helped a great deal," Baracetti said. "The Lacigas felt the pressure playing in front of that type of crowd, who provided an awesome atmosphere. It was fantastic".

"Fortunately we had a bit of luck and this allowed us to stay ahead," Conde added. "Now we want to continue with this sort of form to be playing at our best by the time the Olympics arrive".

The bronze medal match went in favour of the Brazilian duo of Fabio Araujo and Rodrigo Monteiro after they beat the Argentine pair of Sebastian Menegozzo and Adrian Bialy 2-0 (21-17, 21-19).
