Mar del Plata, January 23, 2004 - Home favourites Mariano Baracetti and Martin Conde opened their account at the Argentina Men's Satellite tournament on Friday with a hard fought 2-1 (21-23, 21-15, 15-6) victory over their compatriots Fabio Pérez - Facundo Palavecino.
In fantastic conditions at the beach complex "Balneário 24" de Punta Mogotes the 2001 world champions had to show all their class to come back from a set down before claiming victory in front of a passionate crowd 2,000 strong.
"This tournament is as tough as we thought," Baracetti said. "Despite our performance today we still hope we can make it through to Sunday's final".
The day began under the blazing Argentine sun with another of the tournament favourites the Swiss brothers Paul and Martin Laciga (number three on the 2003 FIVB world tour ranking) beating another local combination in Esteban Soriano and Santiago Etchegaray in straight sets (21-6, 21-10).
"We are having a great time here at Mar del Plata," Paul said. "The people are very kind and there are many beautiful sights.
