Eight Women's Teams and Eight Men's Teams Qualified for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens

Lausanne, Switzerland, 11 January 2004 - After the 2003 World Cup in Japan, where the men's teams from Brazil, Italy, and Serbia Montenegro, and the women's teams from China, the US and Brazil qualified for the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Continental Qualification Tournaments were held last weekend.

Teams that earned a spot in Athens include the US (NORCECA Men), the Dominican Republic (South America Women), Argentina (South America Men), Russia (Europe Men), Germany (Europe Women), Tunisia (Africa Men), Kenya (Africa Women) and Cuba (NORCECA Women). A total of seven women's teams and seven men's teams have already qualified for the Athens 2004 Summer Games, and counting the men's and women's teams from Greece, eight teams have secured berths.

The four remaining Olympic tickets will be decided next May in the Asian men's and women's qualifiers in Japan. The men's teams will compete in three World tournaments in Japan, Portugal and Spain, while eight women's teams will play in a tournament in Japan to determine who will earn the three remaining spots.

South America Men - Emotional Argentina seals Olympic berth
CARACAS, Venezuela, January 11, 2004 - Two great performances from Marcos Milinkovic and Jorge Elgueta helped Argentina book its Athens 2004 Olympic Games spot after beating Venezuela in straight sets 25-18, 25-19, 25-23 in the final match of the South American Men's Olympic Qualification tournament on Sunday in Caracas.

South America Women - Dominican Republic claims Athens ticket
CARACAS, Venezuela, January 11, 2004 - Pan American champion the Dominican Republic joined Brazil, the United States and Cuba as one of the women's teams to book a berth at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games after defeating Peru in straight sets 25-20, 25-18, 25-21 on the final day of the South American Women's Olympic Qualification tournament in Caracas on Sunday.

Europe Women - Germany qualifies for Athens
BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 10, 2004 - European Championship bronze medallist Germany surprised all by convincingly beating Turkey, the European Championship silver medallist, in straight sets (25-22, 25-16, 25-7) in Saturday's final of the Women's European Olympic Qualification tournament here in Baku, Azerbaijan, to qualify for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

Europe Men - Russia claims ticket to Athens
LEIPZIG, Germany, January 10, 2004 - World Championship runner-up Russia stormed home in the final of the Men's European Olympic Qualification Tournament in Germany to qualify for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games after beating the Netherlands 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-16) in Saturday's final in Leipzig.

Africa Men - Tunisia claims Olympic ticket
TUNIS, Tunisia, January 10, 2004 - Tunisia continued its prominence in African men's volleyball by qualifying for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games after clinching a straight sets (25-19, 25-16, 25-22) victory over its archrival Egypt on Saturday at the Olympic Qualification tournament in the Tunisian capital of Tunis.

Africa Women - Superb Kenya gains Olympic spot
NAIROBI, Kenya, January 10, 2004 - The superb Kenya women's team qualified for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games after gaining its third successive victory at the Women's Olympic Qualification tournament on Saturday in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, beating Nigeria 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 21-25, 25-10).
