CARACAS, Venezuela, January 10, 2004 - The Dominican Republic scored a crucial win over Venezuela in straight sets (25-18, 25-22, 29-27) in 73 minutes on Saturday in the Poliedro Stadium in Caracas to leave them as the only unbeaten team and favorite to win the South American Women's Olympic Qualification tournament and claim the one ticket available for the Olympic Games in Athens.
The Dominicans, coached by Jorge Garbey, gave a great show of powerful offensive coupled with a strong block in front of 4,000 fans that supported the home team all match.
Milagros Cabral was the best player in the Caribbean team while Desirée Glod shone for Venezuela.
The third set was the most testing as Venezuela, down 24-21, managed to level the scores before pushing their more fancied opponents up to 29 points for the set.
The win gives the Dominicans their best chance to qualify for Athens and on Sunday their match against Peru will determine their fate.
