Africa Women - Superb Kenya gain Olympic spot

Nairobi, Kenya, January 10, 2004 - The superb Kenya women's team qualified for the Athens Olympics after gaining their third successive victory at the Women's Olympic Qualification tournament on Saturday in the Kenyan capital Nairobi beating Nigeria 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 21-25, 25-10).

In front of more than 9000 fans the passionate local crowd made it difficult for Nigeria to control the match, and with Kenya's stars - the European based Violet Barasa and Lucy Chege - in top form at the net Nigeria's tall spikers Onuhoa Chinyere and Egbum Dorothy were played out of the game.

Kenya won the first and second sets easily before Nigeria picked up their game in the third set pouncing on the Kenyan mistakes to claim their only set of the game before the home side returned to form to seal the fourth set and their ticket to Athens.

The other match played on Saturday saw African champions Egypt beat the Seychelles in straight sets (25-6, 25-20, 25-14) to finish second behind Kenya.
