CARACAS, Venezuela, January 9, 2004 - The combined offense of Ernardo Gomez and Ronald Mendez gave Venezuela a spectacular straight sets victory 25-17, 25-10, 25-15 over Peru in the last match of the first day of the South American Men's Olympic Qualifying tournament in Poliedro Stadium in Caracas.
The hosts needed only 56 minutes to overcome their lesser fancied opponents and stand as the favourites, with Argentina, to claim the single ticket up for grabs for the Athens Olympic Games.
Venezuela, current Pan American champions, displayed a fast offensive game and an improving defense over the young Peruvian side that had Alfredo Solis as its best player.
Coached by Miguel Cambero, Venezuela started with Rojas, Valera, Luna, Méndez, Gómez and Márquez, with libero Valderrama. Perú, coached by Fernando Vasquez, played with Zayers, Barrios, Sizgorich, Ramírez, Rodríguez and Solís with libero García.
