Caracas, Venezuela, January 9, 2004 - The Dominican Republic made a great start to the Women's South American Olympic Qualification tournament here in Poliedro Stadium in Caracas on Friday by collecting a straight sets (25-19, 25-22, 25-17) victory over Argentina in their opening match. Peru and Venezuela will play the next match to complete the first day of the tournament that gives away one ticket to the Athens Olympic Games.
In the opening match current Pan American champion the Dominican Republic easily overcame an Argentinean side that started with most of the players that participated in the 2003 World Cup in Japan.
The Ricardo Arias coached Dominican side started with Vargas, Bautista, Cabral, Jackson, Rodriguez and Moreta intheir line up with libero Carrera and proved too powerful in attack and on the block. For Argentina Lamas, Parisi, Brussa, Vincente, Conti and Pacheco started, with Robinet in as libero.
Saturday sees Argentina play Peru before the Dominican Republic meets Venezuela.
