January 4, 2003 - The Tunisian men's team will start favourites for the African Olympic qualification tournament, which starts on Monday in their homelands, as they are considered the strongest and most experienced team in African men's Volleyball.
Tunisia won the last big African competition, the Nations' Championship in August, after beating hosts Egypt in the final courtesy of some great play from their European based professional player Noureddine Hfaiedh and the clever setter Ghazi Guidara. Their Italian coach Antonio Giacobbe will be hoping to continue that form, which saw his side win the 2003 African and Arab Nations' Championships and qualify for the 2002 World Championship in Argentina and the 2003 World Cup in Japan. Tunisia finished 11th at the World Cup recording two important victories over hosts Japan and arch rivals Egypt.
Tunisian Federation President Dr. Bechir Louazir stated that Tunisian Volleyball is now at its optimum level with the hope of staying at the world elite level through the strategy made by the federation over the past 10 years.
