Puerto Rico is entering the Norceca Women´s Olympic Qualifier Tournament with a mix of veteran and rookie players like captain and setter Xiomara Molero, 32, and Yarimar Rosa, who at 15 is the youngest athlete in the event that quicks off today.
“The tournament marks the come back to the national team of Eva Cruz and I hope she can compensate the absence of Aury Cruz, who is taking part in the finals of the NCAA in the United States,” said David Aleman, the Puerto Rican coach.
“With the exception of Aury, we are bringing our complete squad with the core of the players that took part in the World Championship and also in the Pan American Games,” said Aleman.
He praised the character showed by young Rosa in the NORCECA Confederation Tournament, when Puerto Rico was represented mostly by junior players.
“She was the best scorer of that event and it was a very good experience for her,” he said. “This definitely will be another step in her development as an international player.”
