October 21, 2003, Warsaw, Poland - The President of the Republic of Poland, Mr Aleksander Kwasniewski, had the members of the women's national team as his guests on Tuesday in order to pay tribute to their enormous success achieved during the European Championship in Turkey in September.
Representatives of the government, the Polish Olympic Committee, the Polish Sports Confederation and the Polish Volleyball Federation also attended the meeting held in the President's Palace in Warsaw.
President Kwasniewski, who used to be the countries sports minister and is still a keen sports fan, addressed the players and coaches admitting that: "I must confess that I experienced the final match against Turkey as one of the most spectacular sports events, ever."
"I would like to congratulate and thank you dear ladies; you have achieved something which is the most important factor in the team sports - unity."
Head coach, Mr Andrzej Niemczyk, whose work was particularly valued by the President, presented his personal gold medal to Mr Kwasniewski, asking him to keep it as an award for the whole Polish nation.
"Obviously I did not deserve this," replied the President. "But let me treat it as an optimistic gesture. Mr Niemczyk gave it to me because he is certain that there will be more gold medals in the near future".
