France name squad for World Cup

October 13, 2003 - European Continental Men’s Championship runners up France named their squad for the 2003 World in Japan, which starts on November 16, on Monday.

Coach Philippe Blain has named an 18-man squad which is notable for the absence of France’s most experienced player Luc Marquet, who, with more than 300 international caps, retired after the European Championship in September.

But France still boasts plenty of talent with the likes of Laurent Capet, Franz Granvorka, Stephane Antiga and Hubert Henno in the side, which has two new caps – Xavier Kapfer, a reception attacker, who makes the step up from the French A side, and Marc Schalk, a player from Cannes, who has been selected for his defensive qualities.
