FORT WORTH, Texas, September 30, 2003 – Ana Chagas scored a match-high 17 points to lead
three players in to double figures as the Brazilian women's Volleyball team defeated the United States 3-0 in Texas on Tuesday.
Chagas had 16 kills and one block in Brazil's 26-24, 25-16, 27-25
victory in the first of four matches between the two teams on their
current USA tour.
The tour resumes on Wednesday with a match in Fort Worth.
Valeska Menezes scored 15 points on 12 kills, three blocks and a hitting
percentage of .667, while Erika Coimbra tallied 13 points on 11 kills
and two service aces for the Brazilians, who defeated the Americans to
capture the bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney,
Australia.
Tayyiba Haneef scored 15 points on 13 kills and
two blocks to lead the United States, which had its six-match winning
streak snapped as its season record fell to 20-10.
Logan Tom and Nancy Metcalf scored
eight points apiece in the loss. Tom had six kills, one block and one
ace, while Metcalf had six kills and two blocks.
USA middle blocker Heather Bown added seven points
on six kills and one block.
Texas native Stacy Sykora, a two-time All-American at
Texas A&M, started at libero for Team USA and registered a team-high 11
digs.
