Women's Senior European Championships 2003

ANKARA, ANTALYA, Turkey, 21 September - Netherlands pulled of an upset victory over World Champion Italy at the European Women's Volleyball Championship on Sunday with a clear straight sets victory in Pool 12 while in Pool 1 action Germany, Russia and Turkey all won their second match.
The Dutch team had lost their opening encounter 2-3 against Poland and went into the match against Italy as outsiders. They controlled the match from the opening whistle and spiker Elles Leferink, who made her return in the Dutch squad this year, was unstoppable. Titia Sustring, rookie during this European Championships, also excelled and the combined Dutch effort rendered the Italians helpless.
In other Pool II action, Poland booked its second victory after defeating Ukraine 3-1. Dorota Swieniewicz played a key role scoring 22 points. Bulgaria won its first match of the tournament defeating Czech Republic in straight sets. Russia had some problems in their opening set in their Pool 1 clash with Slovakia who forced the Russians to 27-25 before finally conceding. Russia played without Ekaterina Gamova out sick on the day.
Slovakia put up a brave resistance in the opener and fended off the vicious spiles by Evguenia Artamonova and Elizaveta Tichtchenko. However Russia took firm control of the match after the tough opener and sailed through to their 3-0 victory. Germany moved to the leading position of Pool I after winning against Romania even though they tended to slump in the middle of each set. They are yet to concede a set at the championship. Romanian Carmen Turlea was the best scorer with 18 points. German captain Angelina Grün made 17 points.
'I am glad we won the first two matches 3-0,' German coach Hee Wan Lee stated. 'No match during the European Championship is easy so its great that´we have not conceded a set so far."
