August 25, 2003, Tehran, Iran - The European Champions Italy have been knocked out of the Men's U21 World Championship after conceding their third successive loss from as many games going down to Bulgaria on Monday in straight sets 25-21, 25-20, 25-17 in Pool D.
Serbia and Montenegro qualified for the play-off seeding group after topping Pool D with three wins from three, following their nail-biting 3-2 (25-16, 23-25, 25-17, 25-27, 15-10) win over Slovakia.
Other teams to move through to the Play off seeding group as top qualifiers of their respective pools include Brazil in Pool C after they collected their third win with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-15) thrashing of Tunisia, Russia in Pool B, who remained unbeaten following their 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-22) win over Germany and South Korea in Pool A, who knocked over Egypt in straight sets 25-16, 25-20, 25-22.
The play off elimination group for second and third place getters includes Iran (two wins) and Egypt (one win) in Pool A while Venezuela were knocked out. Iran beat Venezuela 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-20) in the final match of the group.
In Pool B, Germany, with two wins, and India, with one, go through while China are on the early plane home following their third loss on Monday after India inflicted a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-22) defeat.
In Pool C, Poland (two wins) and Canada (one win) are both through to the next round despite Poland's 3-1 (25-18, 27-29, 25-22, 25-15) win between the two sides on Monday. Tunisia finished fourth and their tournament is now over.
And in Pool D, Bulgaria with two wins and Slovakia with one win are still alive while Italy head home.
