Alanya, Turkey, 22 August 2003 – Top teams will contest the European Beach Volleyball Championships Finals here in Turkey (Aug 27-31) with Swiss duo
Markus Egger and Sascha Heyer the top men’s seeds and defending champions Daniela
Gattelli and Lucilla Perrotta of Italy leading the women here at Kleopatra Beach.
Players are competing for a total purse of EUR 200,000 as well as Olympic
“Everything is looking perfect in Alanya,” said Christian Scholbrock speaking for
European Confederation Beach Volleyball Coordinator Erik Schmidt said he
expected a high level competition.
Twenty teams from each gender are already down to contest the main draw with
Norwegians Vegard Hoidalen and Jorre-Andre Kjemperud and Swiss brothers Paul
and Martin Laciga expected to challenge the top seeds.
The CEV has also granted the three wild cards to the Greek duo Beligratus- Michalopoulos, Koulikovski-Verbov of Russia and the Swedes Berg and Dahl. Although Gatelli-Perrotta are favorites in the women’s lineup, they will have a tough time eliminating the strong Czech team Eva Celbova and Sona Novakova,
who are fresh from a third place finish at the Swatch-FIVB World Tour Bali
Open and Dutch duo Rebekka Kadijk and Marrit Leenstra, who recently won the
Swatch-FIVB World Tour event in China. The last four vacancies in each gender
will be filled with the four best teams of the qualification tournament.
The qualification tournament begins on Wednesday and finals will be played on
Saturday Aug, 30 (women) and Sunday Aug. 31 (men).
