August 23, 2003 - The Egyptian Women's Volleyball team booked a ticket to the 2003 World Cup in Japan in November after claiming the 14th African Nations Championship in Nairobi, Kenya on Saturday.
Egypt beat the hosts Kenya, for the second time in the tournament, in the final 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 29-27, 25-19). Both teams had earlier met in preliminary pool play, which Egypt won 3-2. Tahani Toson, the best player in Africa for 10 years led Egypt to the win with an exemplery performance in spiking and blocking, which earned her the best player of the tournament award.
Cameroon won the bronze medal after they dismissed Algeria 3-1 (25-22, 25-16, 20-25, 25-20) in the playoff for third and Tunisia finished fifth defeating the Seychelles 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 30-28). In the match for seventh and eighth RD Congo defeated Senegal 3-2 (28-26, 25-22, 23-35, 18-25, 15-12)..
The Egyptian senior women's team became the sixth team from that country to qualify for a big FIVB competition after the senior men's and women's team played in the 2002 World Championship and the Boy's U19, Men's U21 and Girls U18 teams all qualified for their respective World Championships in 2003.
