July 25, 2003, Colorado Springs, Colo. – A mixture of national team players, collegiate stars and one high school phenomenum make up the 12-player roster that will represent the United States at the XIV Pan American Games women’s volleyball competition in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, next month.
The women’s roster includes: Erin Aldrich; Wiz Bachman; Cynthia Barboza; Nicole Branagh; Therese Crawford; Sarah Drury; Lizzy Fitzgerald; Brittany Hochevar; Jennifer Joines; Ogonna Nnamani; Katie Olsovsky; and Tracy Stalls.
Aldrich, Bachman, Branagh, Crawford, Drury, Fitzgerald, Hochevar and Stalls are current members of the USA women’s national volleyball team.
Last summer Barboza, 16, helped guide the USA Girl’s Youth national team to a gold medal at the NORCECA Youth Girls Continental Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah, and earned a silver medal as a member of the USA Women’s Junior national team at the NORCECA Junior Women’s Continental Championships in Puerto Rico.
The women will be coached by Mike Hebert, women’s head coach at the University of Minnesota. He will be aided by Denise Corlett, the women’s assistant coach at Stanford University, and Chris Gonzalez, who was recently hired as the women’s assistant coach at the University of Iowa.
The United States will be a member of Pool A along with Brazil, Peru and Puerto Rico. Pool B consists of Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Venezuela. The women’s volleyball tournament will run from Sunday, Aug. 3 until Saturday, Aug. 16 at the Volleyball Pavilion in the Olympic Center Juan Pablo Duarte.
