July 24, 2003 - The German national team, now in full preparation for the European Championship left Thursday for Tunisia with a squad of 15 to contest three international friendlies with that country.
The squad has been in the southern German city of Friedrichshafen absolving a training camp since July 15.
The team, under the leadership of head coach Stelian Moculescu will play three matches against Tunisia July 26-28. They will be the team's first encounters since the 2003 World League. The matches are important preparation for the high point of the year, when German hosts the European Championship Sept 5-14
"We began very hard training in Friedrichshafen and we will continue this in Tunisia," Moculescu said. "We are now in a phase which is very important looking forward to the European Championships. We are not building the firm foundations."
Moculescu goes to Tunisia with 15 players, including Stefan Hübner and Michael Mayer who did not play in the World League. Wolfgang Kuck also joins the team after returning from a recent holiday in Canada.
Another training camp and more matches are on the program after the trip to Africa, including against Romania (Aug 8 in Heidelberg and Aug 10 in Riedstadt-Goddelau). They then play the Netherlands (August 15-16 in Luxembourg), Serbia and Montenegro (Aug. 30 in Münster and Aug 31 in Trier) as well as a tournament in Poland (Aug 21-25) against Poland, Spain and Netherlands.
