Winnipeg, Canada, July 4, 2003 - Canada's National Women’s Volleyball Team took on 15th ranked Dominican Republic last night at the Pan American Cup in Saltillo, Mexico with hopes of making it to the top four of the tournament and a spot at the 2004 World Grand Prix, until a straight sets 21-25, 20-25, 15-25d efeat at the hands of the Dominican Repubic shattered their hopes.
Head Coach Lorne Sawula was disappointed with the result, saying that his team allowed too many serve/receive errors and were ‘tipped to death’. The team was able to get ahead of the Dominican at times, but were unable to capitalize on leads when it mattered.
Top scorers for Canada were Barb Bellini (White Rock, BC) with 9 kills, and Amy Tutt (Vancouver, BC) with 7 kills and 2 blocks. Libero Annie Lévesque (Amqui, PQ) had a flawless night defensively with 9 digs. Canada will now face 22nd ranked Venezuela for 5th place, and play for the right to be an alternate for next year’s World Grand Prix.
