Greece collects two gold medals from BVA Balkan Championship tournament
Well-known tandem Vasiliki Arvaniti/Maria Tsiartsiani swept through the women’s competition, without losing any sets in their five matches. The Bulgarian home queens Asya Dinova/Svetla Angelova fell victim to the Greeks in the semifinals, losing 2-0 (21-16, 21-14). In the final, Arvaniti/Tsiartsiani took only 29 minutes to seal their superiority over Romania’s Ioana Ordean/Adriana Melniciuc by 2-0 (21-15, 21-16). Dinova/Angelova took the bronze after overpowering Moldova’s Polina Idjilova/Ecaterina Arabadji by 2-1 (18-21, 21-17, 15-12) in a dramatic 48-minute third place match.
The men’s tournament featured the reunion of 2009 Balkan Championship silver medalists and long-time former partners Valentin Dimov and Teodor Marinov. In their second official debut as a pair, they managed to repeat the biggest success of their previous run as a duo, but this time with the support of their fellow citizens from Kardzhali. Dimov/Marinov made a victorious run to the final where they lost to Greece’s Georgios Kotsilianos/Nikos Zoupanis by 2-0 (21-16, 23-21) after 39 minutes of play. Before that, in the semifinals, the Greeks overcame the resistance of another home town pair from Kardzhali, Nikolay Kolev/Dimitar Kalchev, and, similar to their female compatriots, did not lose a single set in the competition. Kolev/Kalchev took the bronze after winning the 45-minute third place battle with Romania’s Adrian Florin Holhos/Moisa Petru Abrudan.
Duos from five of the ten BVA member countries - Bulgaria, Greece, Moldova, Romania and Turkey - took part in the second tournament of the 2014 BVA Beach Volleyball Balkan Championship Tour.
