Ukraine's Oleh Plotnytskiy (pictured) teams with Illia Kovaliov to capture Pool D at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympics Games Friday.

Nanjing, China, August 22, 2014 - A day after pairs from Puerto Rico and Russia clinched the top spots in their pools, teams from Germany, Ukraine, Uruguay and Venezuela also claimed group titles here Friday during the fifth and final day of preliminary rounds for the Beach Volleyball competition in the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games at the Nanjing Sports Park Complex.

Capturing pools Friday were Niklas Rudolf/Eric Stadie of Germany (Pool B), Illia Kovaliov/Oleh Plotnytskiy of the Ukraine (Pool D), Marco Cairus/Mauricio Vieyto of Uruguay (Pool A) and Tigrito Gomez/Peter Hernandez of Venezuela (Pool F).  Three of the four teams completed group play with 5-0 records while the Ukrainians were 4-1.

Sergio Figueroa/Daniel Rivera of Puerto Rico (Pool C) and Oleg Stoyanovskiy/Artem Yarzutkin of Russia (Pool E) both finished their groups with 5-0 records.  Each pool winner along with the best two second-place finishers (France and Finland) earn first-round “byes” when the 24-team single-elimination bracket begins Sunday.  The pairings for elimination rounds will be announced Saturday afternoon.

Men’s Key Points
• After being upset by a team from Germany on the second day of pool play, 2014 FIVB under-21 world champions Arthur Mariano and George Wanderley of Brazil have won their next two matches by defeating teams from New Zealand and Lithuania.  Arthur and George won the FIVB’s under-19 world championships three weeks ago in Porto, Portugal.
• Kovaliov and Plotnytskiy, who placed second at the FIVB U19 worlds, posted a 4-1 in Pool D to win the group after defeating a team from Canada Friday.
• FIVB U19 bronze medal medalists Tigrito Gomez and Peter Hernandez of Venezuela also won their fifth Pool F match Friday by defeating a previously undefeated team from Indonesia.
