Early pool winners at the FIVB U19 World Championships

Porto, Portugal, July 31, 2014 - With the final pool round still left on Friday, some of the teams at the FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championships in Porto already secured top position in the pool.


Among those teams are last year’s gold medallist Eduarda Santos Lisboa from Brazil and her new partner Andressa Cavalcanti Ramalho and Russia’s Daria Rudykh and the 2013 silver medallist Nadezda Makroguzova. In the men’s competition Poland’s Lysikowski/Jetke also secured first place.


Key points

·       In the women’s competition Eduarda/Andressa (BRA), Rudykh/Makroguzova (RUS), Schneider/Arnholdt (GER), Rohrer/Gerson (SUI) and Adamcikova/Valkova (CZE) all booked four straight wins.

·       In the men’s competition only Arthur/George Wanderley (BRA) and Yarzutkin/Stoyanovskiy (RUS) booked four straight wins.

·       The top four of each pool qualifies for the elimination phase.

·       All pool winners get a bye in the first knockout round, plus the two highest ranked runners-up.

·       Three competitors have a birthday on Friday: Eduarda Santos Lisboa (BRA, 16) and the McNamara twins (Canada,17).


Early birthday present for Brazil’s Eduarda at the U19 in Porto

Reigning U19 world champion Eduarda Santos Lisboa got an early birthday present from her partner Andressa Cavalcanti Ramalho on Thursday: top position in pool B.

The Brazilian girls defeated Paraguay’s Michelle/Erika (21-17, 21-16) and Italy’s Frasca/Giometti (21-13, 21-16) on the second day of the FIVB U19 World Championships. Read more


Big game ahead for France and Argentina in pool C

France’s Arnaud Loiseau and Arnaud Gauthier-Rat and Argentina’s Leo Aveiro and Santiago Aulisi will clash on Friday to decide who wins top position in pool C at the FIVB U19 World Championships in Porto.

Both teams won all of their four pool matches so far and will meet in the final one on Friday. The winner will get a bye in the first knockout round. Read more


Brazil’s Arthur and George Wanderley love the art of beach volleyball

Brazil’s Arthur Diego Mariano Lanci and George Wanderley Souto Maior took a firm lead on Thursday in pool B at the FIVB U19 World Championships.

The South-Americans defeated Austria’s Kratz/Pristauz-Telsnigg (21-15, 21-18) and Germany’s top team Rudolf/Stadie (23-21, 21-17) on Thursday and have not lost one set in four games. Read more

The third day of the U19 World Championships starts at 9.00 with the last round of pool matches, followed by the first elimination round in the afternoon. The semifinals and medal matches for both genders are scheduled for Sunday.


This is the 13th edition of the FIVB U19 World Championships and the third hosted by Porto. This year the courts are actually spread over two cities. The centre court and second court are situated in Porto, the four outside courts in neighbouring town Matosinhos.
