FIVB announces Rio 2016 Olympic Qualification System for beach volleyball

Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann from Germany made history at the 2012 London Olympic Games

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 6, 2014 – The qualification process for beach volleyball at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio has been updated to outline the tournaments eligible for points for the current Olympic cycle.

The men’s and women’s beach volleyball events in 2016 will see 24 teams in each gender, with one place reserved for the host country in each case.

The Rio 2016 Olympic Games Qualification system will also see one place per gender granted to the winning national federation of the 2015 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in the Netherlands in what is the major difference in the qualification system from the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The qualified places through the Olympic Ranking have also been decreased to fifteen per gender for this Olympic cycle.  The changes have been made to allow lower-ranked countries a new route to the Olympic Games, offering them more experience and helping to develop the game around the world. As before, this also includes a maximum of two places per country.

The Olympic Ranking is established based on the FIVB World Raking points earned at the 12 best performance as a team in the World Championships, World Tour events and recognised Continental Tour Finals (best of the two results) from January 1, 2015 until June 12, 2016.

A total of 142 countries from around the world took part in the qualification process for the Olympic Games in 2012, with the debut of the Continental Cup and the World Cup Olympic Qualification Tournament.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, beach volleyball made headline news around the world and the top 10 of the best Olympic moments on the IOC website.

USA’s Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh took their third straight Olympic gold victory against compatriots Jen Kessy and April Ross while Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann became the first German pair to win gold in any volleyball event and the first Europeans of either gender to win beach volleyball gold.
