Zurich glory for Swiss and German duos

Tanja's Goricenac and Huberli enjoyed a home win in Zurich
Zurich, Switzerland, April 14, 2014 – There was joy for two teams looking to make an impact on the 2014 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour when they claimed gold in Zurich on the first stop of the Swiss Tour.

Switzerland’s leading duo Tanja Goricanec and Tanja Huberli defeated compatriots Nadine Zumkehr and Joana Heidrich in the women’s final, while Germany’s Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik ensured that the crowd outside Zurich’s main station didn’t have double the celebrations by beating home duo Jonas Kissling and Mats Kovatsch.

The two Tanjas got off to a strong start before Zumkehr and Heidrich fought back to level the scores. Goricanec and Huberli held their nerve in the third though to win 2-1 (21-11, 19-21, 15-6). The bronze medal went to last year’s winners Spain’s Liliana Fernandez and Elsa Baquerizo, who defeated Isabelle Forrer- Anouk Verge-Depre 2-1 (21-13, 19-21, 18-16).

FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships bronze medallists Erdmann and Matysik didn’t hang around in the opening set of the final and while Kissling and Kovatsch fought back in the second half 2-0 (21-11, 22-20).

In the men’s bronze match Switzerland’s Sebastien Chevallier and Alexei Prawdzic defeated France’s  Jean-Baptiste Daguerre and Yannick Salvetti 2-0 (21-16, 21-15).

The 2014 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour begins at the end of the month at the Fuzhou Open in China from April 22-27. After that there are nine Grand Slams and 10 Open tournaments, with the final event the Durban Open in South Africa from December 9-14.
