Leading teams show their class on opening day in Khanom
Khanom, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand, April 9, 2014 - Veterans Alexandr Dyachenko and Alexey Sidorenko enjoyed two convincing wins on the opening day of the 5th Khanom-Chang Asian Beach Volleyball Tour at Nadan Beach.
Contesting the round-robin preliminaries Group A, the Kazakhstan duo got off to a great start with a comfortable 2-0 (21-12 21-7) win over Sri Lanka 2's Sandun Madushnka Andibuduge and Supan Dileka Fernando Weerakonda in 48 minutes.
They continued their winning streak by requiring only 29 minutes in defeating Malaysia’s Mohd Aizzat Bin Mohd Zokri and Raja Nazmi Saifuddin Bin Raja Hussin in straight sets 2-0 (21-14 21-13).
For Dyachenko and Sidorenko, bronze medallists at the 2012 Asian Beach Games, the two wins on the first day set them up to repeat their 2012 success, before the missed out to Australians Leonard Isaac Kapa and Christopher Bernard in 2013.
Thailand’s leading pair Sittichai Sangkhachot and Prathip Sukto enjoyed a win and a loss, as did their compatriots Yungtin and Chutipong Sukarayotin and Australia’s Sam Boehm and Cole Durant.
In the women's competition Thailand leading pair Tanarattha Udomchavee and Varapatsorn Raradong, began with a 2-0 (21-15 21-8) win over Japan Matsuyama siblings, Miyuki and Hiroko, in 35 minutes.
The second Thai pair Rumpaipruet Numwong and Khanittha Hongpak survived a sturdy challenge from Wong Yuen Mei and Ng Tin Lai to beat the Hong Kong duo 2-1 (21-17 24-26 15-4). The Thais stormed on to brush off Vietnam Tu Thi Thu Van and Le Ti Bich Vi in straight sets 2-0 (21-14 21-11).
Australia’s Nicole Laird and Mariafe Artacho led Australia’s hopes with a 2-0 (21-12 21-15) win over New Zealand Julia Tilley and Shaunna Polley before they added a second victory over Sri Lanka Ruwani Thakshila Warnakulasuriya and Shanika Priyadarshanie Batuwangal.
