AVC Beach Volleyball Continental Cup set to begin in June

Japan booked its ticket to the 2012 Olympic Games in London by winning the AVC Continental Cup Final

Beijing, China, March 20, 2014 – The second edition of the two year AVC Beach Volleyball Continental Cup cycle which will determine the teams from the Asia Confederation that will make it to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil will take place from June 2014 to June 2016 as confirmed by the annual AVC Beach Volleyball Council Meeting held in Jakarta last Friday.

The timeline for the AVC Continental Cup will be as follows:

First Phase (Development Division, with participation restricted to the top three ranked teams in the zone):
June 1, 2014 to December 31, 2014.

The date may be extended to March 31, 2015 in order take advantage of the best weather conditions in the Southern Hemisphere for the Oceania Asia Zone. The top three ranked countries will advance to the second phase of the zonal championship.

Second Phase (Zonal Championship):  January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2015.

Six national federations per gender, including the top three ranked national federations from the first phase and top three ranked national federations from the first edition of AVC Continental Cup, will take part.

The winning national federation will advance directly to the fourth phase (Continental Cup Final) while the second and third national federations will have the opportunity to play in the third phase (semifinal).

Third Phase (Semi-Final):  March 21, 2016 to May 30, 2016.

10 national federations per gender will participate in the tournament to determine the top two ranked national federations per gender who will advance to the fourth phase (Continental Cup).

Fourth Phase (Continental Cup Final): June 20 to 26, 2016

Eight national federations per gender including the host country will participate in order to determine the winning country that will directly advance to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. The second and third national federations per gender will have the opportunity to play in the FIVB Continental Cup Olympic Qualification in July, 2016.

The competition format will be country versus country with the best of three matches format, with each country represented by two teams per gender. The team with more AVC ranking points will be the national federations’ number one team.

It has been almost confirmed that the first phase of Eastern Asia Zone will be held in Nanjing in June 2014 with the Youth Olympic Games as a test event, while the date and location of the first phase in the other four zones will be determined later in April.

The second edition of the AVC Beach Volleyball Continental Cup will no doubt create a huge wave of interest for the sport of beach volleyball throughout the Asia and Pacific following the great success of the first edition where 36 national federations participated in the tournaments with Japan and Australia eventually emerging as the winners at the final stages held in Fuzhou (China) to qualify a men’s and women’s pair respectively for the 2012 London Olympics.
