Reigning champs warm up for World Tour in Egyptian sunshine

Janis Smedins (left) and Aleksandrs Samoilovs have seen their popularity rocket after their success in 2013
Riga, Latvia, March 17, 2014 – FIVB Beach Volleyball Men’s World Rankings champions Janis Smedins and Aleksandrs Samoilovs have been helping spread the popularity of their sport by running a coaching camp in the warmer climes of Hurghada in Egypt.

The Latvian pair are riding the crest of a wave of popularity in the homeland and after winning the 2013 title at the last tournament of the year, the Durban Open, they received a Presidential welcome from Latvia’s President Andris Berzins after being greeted at the airport by legions of fans.

To capitalise on such popularity the duo and their fathers Andris Smedins and Genadijs Samoilovs have been coaching 24 young female and male Latvian beach volleyball players for the 10-day camp just over a month before the 2014 World Tour begins.

“I’m very glad that my favourite sport is becoming more and more popular in the world and people in Latvia wish to improve their skills and involve themselves beach volleyball training.

“It is definitely one of the most popular sports in Latvia and I think that this is our obligation as professional sportsmen to involve ourselves as much as possible in promoting this development so I unhesitatingly agreed to participate in this project.”

As well as receiving expert training participants took part in a King and a Queen of the Beach competitions and such is the popularity of the camp that there are already plans to repeat it in Spain later in the year.
