World Tour champs off to winning start

Talita (left centre) and Lima have already pocketed their first gold medals of 2014
Santiago, Chile, March 16, 2014 – Women’s FIVB Beach Volleyball World Rankings champions Talita Antunes and Taiana Lima laid down a marker for the rest of the season after they claimed their first gold medals of the season at the South American Games.

The Brazilian pair won gold medals in five Grand Slam tournaments en route to claiming the 2013 crown and they were in determined mood to set the bar high from the start of the season, something they did by winning 2-0 (21-14, 21-15) against Argentina’s Ana Gallay and Georgina Klug.

Their compatriots Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt matched their success in the men’s final when they denied home favourites Marco and Esteban Grimalt.

Alison and Bruno won 2-0 (21-13, 21-15) against a side that has experience from the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships and World Tour and who were roared on by the home crowd.

However, the Chilean cousins had no answer to the power of Alison at the net and the nimbleness of Bruno at the back of the court.

Both sets of bronze medals went to Brazilian pairs. Liliane Maestrini and Eduarda Lisboa Santos claimed the women’s and Emanuel Rego teamed up with Pedro Salgado to win the men’s on his first participation in the South American Games.

The multi-sport South American Games started on March 7 and will run though until March 18. will bring you all the news from the volleyball competition later in the week.
